This 3-day summer professional development opportunity prepares educators to bring biological engineering and synthetic biology into their classrooms and laboratories.
Center for College Readiness
The Center for College Readiness (CCR) is the only provider of both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) trainings in the nation. CCR’s programs serve the needs of teachers, students, counselors and administrators. Programs for teachers focus on improving content knowledge and instructional strategies; programs for students emphasize personal growth through curriculum-based education and authentic experiences; and programs for administrators and counselors are designed to build awareness about the role of rigor in preparing students for college and how to create a college-going culture within the school community.
Rice University School Mathematics Project
The Rice University School Math Project (RUSMP) provides a bridge between the Rice University mathematics research community and the Houston PreK-12 mathematics teaching community by helping teachers and school administrators better understand the nature of mathematics, the effective teaching and assessing of mathematics, and the importance of mathematics in today’s society.
School Literacy and Culture
The School Literacy and Culture Project (SLC) is a teacher-education program that unites teachers around a single passion – a belief that all children deserve a high-quality early literacy education. SLC offers a variety of professional development programs that target the early literacy needs of Houston area schools, parents and children.

Teacher Certification Program
The Rice University Education Certification Program is a pathway for Rice undergraduates and Visiting Post-Baccalaureate students to attain state of Texas teacher certification in art, biology, chemistry, economics, English language arts & reading, French, German, health science, technology education, history, Latin, life sciences, mathematics, physical education, physical science, physics, physics/mathematics, political science, psychology and sociology.
Master of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching Program (M.A.T.) invites students with bachelor's degrees to combine professional preparation in education with graduate studies in their major subject field(s).
The Rice M.A.T. provides a strong exploration of the pedagogical and curricular issues necessary for teaching diverse students in a global society. A key element to the program is the extensive fieldwork which links the children, teachers, and classroom practices of urban schools to the course work.
Master of Science Teaching
The Master of Science in Teaching (MST) is a content-based, non-thesis advanced degree primarily directed towards in-service middle school, IPC (integrated physics and chemistry), physics, or astronomy high school teachers and other education and public outreach (EPO) professionals.
Principal Certification Program
The Rice Principal Certification program is appropriate for educators who already hold a master's degree and a Texas teaching certificate and seek focused training in educational leadership. This eighteen-month program is designed for K-12 educators that have at least two years of teaching experience and are motivated to learn the skills necessary to be an effective school leader.
Rice University School Mathematics Project
The Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) offers graduate credit for the following courses: NSCI 580 Contemporary Topics in Elementary School Mathematics; NSCI 585 Contemporary Topics in Middle School Mathematics; NSCI 590 Contemporary Topics in Senior High School Mathematics; NSCI 595 Topics in Contemporary Algebra for In-Service Teachers. These courses are offered during summers to support grant work or during the academic year. Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) credit is also provided.
